How this works

The required rate answers one question: at what speed must the chase move for the rest of the innings?

It climbs quickly once the balls run out, which is why a side 40 behind with 30 balls left is in more trouble than the raw deficit suggests.

This calculation ignores wickets in hand. Two set batters and eight wickets make the same number far more gettable than a last pair do.

Does this account for the DLS method?

No. DLS revises targets after an interruption using a resource table. Once a revised target is announced, enter that figure here instead.

Why is the required rate higher than the equation suggests?

Because it spreads the remaining runs across the remaining overs. A single big over drops it sharply.
