How this works
The average divides by dismissals, not innings. A not-out innings adds runs to the top of the fraction without adding to the bottom, which is why a middle-order batter who finishes chases often averages higher than their scores suggest.
A batter who has never been dismissed has no average at all. The figure is undefined rather than infinite.
Common questions
Why is my average higher than my runs per innings?
Not-outs. Runs per innings divides by every innings; the average divides only by the innings that ended in a dismissal.
Does retired hurt count as a not-out?
Yes. Retired hurt is treated as not out, so it does not add a dismissal to the divisor.
